Champagne houses in Reims

Reims has more great champagne houses open to visitors than anywhere else, most of them on one chalk hill south-east of the centre. Each sells its own cellar visit, booked direct.

The famous Reims houses dug their cellars into chalk quarries that date back to Roman and medieval times. Ruinart, Veuve Clicquot, Pommery, Taittinger, Charles Heidsieck and Martel sit on or beside the Saint-Nicaise hill, where the UNESCO mission counts 57 km of galleries underground. Mumm and Lanson are elsewhere in the city.

Every house below runs its own visits, priced in euros and booked on its own site. Here are the 2026 prices, the opening days that catch people out in winter, how to get there from the station and which house suits whom.

The quick answer

First visit: Pommery (from €30, open every day but three) or Mumm (from €30, a 20-minute walk from the station). For the most beautiful cellars, Ruinart at €90, booked weeks ahead. Then add a family grower: the morning champagne tour visits two before lunch.

Which champagne houses can you visit in Reims?

Eight big names take visitors: Ruinart, Veuve Clicquot, Pommery, Taittinger, Mumm, Lanson, G.H. Martel and, by appointment, Charles Heidsieck.

Prices are the cheapest adult visit in 2026, with a tasting, from each house's own booking page unless noted.

Taittinger's prices come from the Rue des Vignerons booking platform, since the house's own pages did not list them; its FAQ confirms the address and visits of 35 to 55 minutes. Martel's are from the same platform. Moët & Chandon is not in Reims: it is on the Avenue de Champagne in Épernay, 30 minutes away by train.

Which champagne house should I visit in Reims?

Pick by what you want from the day. Ruinart for the cellars, Pommery for the estate and art, Veuve Clicquot for the name, Mumm for the short walk, Taittinger for the abbey ruins.

  • Ruinart: the oldest house on the hill (on Saint-Nicaise since 1768) and the most spectacular chalk pits, the crayères. At €90 for two cuvées it is the dearest entry ticket in town, and groups top out at 12.
  • Pommery: a 19th-century estate with art installations in the galleries. Open every day except 25 December and 1 to 2 January, with a self-guided option. Our pick for a winter Monday.
  • Veuve Clicquot: the yellow label and the story of the widow who ran the house from 1805. Five visit levels from €36. Closed in deep winter; see our Veuve Clicquot guide.
  • Taittinger: Gallo-Roman chalk quarries and remains of the 13th-century Saint-Nicaise abbey, reopened in 2024 after renovation.
  • Mumm: the easiest walk from the centre, three visits from €30 to €60, and a Blanc de Noirs at the top level.
  • Lanson: groups of up to 18, four levels from €32, and a shop and tastings with no reservation needed.

None of these is a grower. For that, you need the villages: the morning tour visits two family estates and is back by 1:10pm, in time for a house after lunch.

Can you walk to the champagne houses in Reims?

To Mumm, yes: about 20 minutes from the station. The Saint-Nicaise hill houses are about 30 minutes on foot from the centre, or bus C to the “Pommery” stop.

The houses give their own times. Mumm says 20 minutes on foot or 10 by car from Reims station. Veuve Clicquot puts its visitor centre about 30 minutes on foot from the city centre and 15 minutes by car from the central station. Pommery recommends bus C to the “Pommery” stop, about 20 minutes from the station, and offers free parking in its courtyard.

Once you are up there, the hill is walkable: Pommery, Veuve Clicquot, Taittinger and Ruinart are a few streets apart. Rome2rio gives about 3.4 km from the station to Veuve Clicquot, which is fine on a dry day and less fun in the rain after two glasses. Lanson, at 66 rue de Courlancy, is in the south of the city and works as its own trip.

What you cannot walk to are the vineyards. The nearest vines of the Montagne de Reims are a drive south, which is where the tours from the station come in.

What is a visit like at the houses on the Saint-Nicaise hill?

A walk through chalk galleries 20 or 30 metres down, a story of the house, then one or two glasses. Cellars stay around 10 to 12 °C all year, so bring a layer.

The format barely changes from house to house: a guide, a group, steps down into the chalk, bottles in racks, the method explained, and a tasting at the end. What changes is the setting. Ruinart is about its listed crayères, at about 12 °C, with a lift for wheelchairs. Pommery says its cellars hold about 10 °C, with long galleries and art. Taittinger opens its visit with a film, then takes you through 4th-century quarries and the abbey remains.

Higher-priced tickets buy rarer wines, not a longer walk. At Pommery, €48 gets two glasses on a two-hour “genius of Madame Pommery” tour, and €150 adds a meal. At Mumm, €60 buys the Blanc de Blancs and Blanc de Noirs pair. At Taittinger, the Instant Comtes costs €80 to €90, depending on the source. The full ladder for Veuve Clicquot is in our Veuve Clicquot guide.

Do you need to book a champagne house visit in Reims?

Yes, almost always. Ruinart takes no walk-ins and sells out weeks ahead; Veuve Clicquot, Mumm, Pommery and Taittinger all sell timed slots online.

The houses' own pages say so: Pommery sells guided and self-guided tickets online, Mumm books in English, French, Italian and Spanish, and Veuve Clicquot points every visit to its online ticket link. For Ruinart, a 2026 guide by En Primeur Club reports no walk-ins and slots gone weeks ahead. The one exception is Lanson: its shop and tastings need no reservation, but the cellar tours do.

Age rules matter for families. Mumm requires under-18s to stay with an adult, Pommery bans unaccompanied minors from the cellars, Ruinart charges €50 for ages 7 to 17, and Lanson €15 to €20. Veuve Clicquot's site sets the legal drinking age of your country, and 21 where no law exists.

Which champagne houses in Reims are open in winter?

Pommery opens every day except 25 December and 1 to 2 January. Veuve Clicquot shuts after the holidays, and Mumm cuts to three days a week from mid-January.

This is the trap for a winter trip. The calendars below are the houses' own for 2026 and early 2027.

Veuve Clicquot had not published its 2027 reopening date when we checked. More on the cold months in Reims champagne houses in winter 2026-27, and on the Christmas market weekend in our Christmas market post.

How many champagne houses can you visit in one day?

Two, at most. Each visit takes 1 to 2 hours plus travel, and a third tasting tends to blur. One house and one grower is the better day.

A workable Reims day: a 10am slot at Mumm, lunch in the centre, then bus C up the hill for a 3pm visit at Pommery or Veuve Clicquot. Leave an hour between visits: tours run on time and the next group goes down without you.

Better still, swap one of the houses for a grower. The morning tour runs 9:20am to 1:10pm, with a boutique grower's press house and cellars and then a second family estate and its vines. Book a house for 3pm and you see both sides of Champagne, big and small, in one day. The afternoon tour does the same in reverse from 2pm.

Is it worth buying champagne in Reims?

From the growers, yes: they sell bottles you will not find at home. At the big houses, expect shop prices; a Moët Impérial costs about €42 in a French supermarket.

The house boutiques sell their whole range, including cuvées that rarely leave France, but the everyday brut costs about what it does in town. UFC-Que Choisir found Moët Impérial Brut at €41.93 and Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label at €43.90 at Super U for its November 2025 test. Small growers are where the finds are, which is one more reason to book a grower tour.

Flying home, pack bottles in checked luggage: most airports still limit liquids in the cabin to 100 ml, and Which? lists only some UK airports with 2-litre scanners. Within the EU, the guide level is 90 litres of wine per person, of which 60 can be sparkling.
